I guess it’s all relative – my job is important to my ship….who would do my job if I wasn’t there?
There are lots of things which are important to the people who work for me so it is important to me that they get done (things like making sure people pass their exams, get paid and get to take time off to go on holiday) there are also things that I need them to do so that the Captain can take his ship to sea.

The ship being able to do it’s job is important to the Navy and the Government as we provide security on the High Seas…… but it’s also important to the country (even though not everyone understands that) because by us doing our jobs, you all can enjoy the quality of life you have by living in a free and safe country.

      Hello macaulayclan,

Thanks for your question. As Emma said, its all relative to the bigger picture – My job is important because the planes wouldn’t fly if they were broken however, if we didn’t have any pilots, the aircraft still wouldn’t fly – if we didn’t have the engineers who built the plane, i would have nothing to fix and the pilots would have nothing to fly!

We are all important in our own little way – we all help to contribute to the larger project and if we didn’t. the project wouldn’t work.

      Great question!

I consider some jobs *more* important but it’s hard to judge yourself when you’re on the inside. Eventually this project will help people but right now I consider working with so many people on such a large project quite important.

As the others have said, as an engineer it is good to look at how your work fits into a bigger cause and yes, I think the field I am working in is important as cars are responsible for a big fraction of the greenhouse gases which are damaging the earth. If we don’t develop them to be cleaner, government laws in the future might mean that we will have to stop using cars all together…
