I’m “aming” to make a UAV that doesn’t require a pilot. One where you have a little computer program in front of you with a picture of a map and on top of the map are 3 little UAV icons. You can click and drag those to another part of the map and then request pictures of what the UAVs are seeing.

I generally aim to ‘make’ a stable foundation for anything that sits in or on the ground.

I currently am looking at London Underground’s outer London embankments near Amersham to ensure that there are no ‘landslides’ or on a smaller scale – slope stability problems. I am ensuring the designed solution is built correctly and safety and any surprises are dealt with.
For example, we have just found mystery cables going into the ground in the location of the works. The Contractor on site using a ‘CAT’ scanner (cable avoidance tool) to check whether there was electricity running through them. As there is none detected, they cables are likely to be communication (for tube driver radios) or signals cables. So I am talking to the signalling team within London Underground to see if they have any drawings showing what these cables might be. The Contractor is not allowed to dig near the cables (so they are not disturbed or damaged and stop trains running!) until the signalling team let us know it is safe to do so. I must ensure that this is done in time so that it doesn’t delay the building works.

      Hello amerl001,

Thanks for your question. As i am an aircraft engineer, I don’t really make anything as such – my job is to make sure that when the aircraft breaks, I fix it as quickly as possible. I have to see what has happened and use my experience to understand the fault and fix it.

I guess you could say that im aiming to make the aircraft work!!

      Hope this helps amerl001

I don’t plan to make anything on my own- it takes whole teams of engineers to design a full vehicle, but it will be nice in the future to see a car which I took part in developing on the road just to say “I helped design that!”

In my job I don’t make anything new….. I make sure equipment works safely and keeps running when we need it to. You never know when you might need one of my systems.
