It depends greatly on the type of driving and also the type of hybrid. For example in city driving where there is a lot of stopping and starting then hybrids are great because they can recapture the energy from braking and use it again later. But when on long distances where there is not much stopping, then all you are doing is carrying extra weight in the form of a battery. Plug-in hybrids have much bigger batteries and hence you can travel further using the batteries alone, but this is still only around 20 miles at the moment. The ideal solution is a battery vehicle but there are hardly any charging stations around so it isn’t going to be practical for a few years.
